18/ 09/ 08 : Survival skills Saturday, September 20, 2008 |

Another day in the 'jungle'..it's really easy to be overwhelmed by it though. I can imagine what it would be like if I was stuck in one.

How DO you survive in a tropical rainforest if you were to be stuck in one? There are many school of thoughts on the subject. I may not be the best reference on the matter but I do think that it all boils down on the individual's will to survive in any given situation. My references on the matter? Talk to the locals in the area that frequent the wilderness, talk to trained rangers and indigenous people for the have a wealth of knowledge. Getting to know the local flora and fauna too has its advantages. For those out there interested to know more on how to survive, you have NatGeo or Discovery Channel to thank for that.

08/ 09/ 08: Recent Findings. Wednesday, September 10, 2008 |

A recent find very close to the main house...at first I thought it was a tiger's footprint.. that gave me goosebumps but then after looking at it closely... it's was that of a decent size Tapir's footprint instead.. Phew!

We keep coming across this animal's footprint around the area. Lots of it,too! You can also tell from the way the ground has been churned up by the wild pigs looking for grubs and worms in the soft ground.

We also found this medicine bottle lying about. Not sure what it was used for. Anyone can shed some light on it?

Clearing Work : A month before Ramadhan 2008 Tuesday, September 2, 2008 |

This is the view of the what's left of our humble kampung house.. restoration work is not going to be easy.

Clearing work began a month before Ramadhan started. The main path/road leading into the main "Tobek Godang" has been partially cleared.. more clearing work needs to be done to restore it to what it once was.. I've got my work cut out for me.

Where it all began... Monday, September 1, 2008 |

12 years' worth of secondary jungle has reclaimed what was once a safe retreat...

This picture is the 'kolam' that was managed by Jamal...

The jungle has practically reclaimed the main dirt road, the existing kolams and whatever that was built. It was disheartening to see the current state it was in.

During the walk to the main "Tobek Godang", secondary growth almost grew as high as my chest. Some even taller.

This was the view of the main"Tobek Godang". Not much to see because of the thick undergrowth that has covered most of the place.

This is just to illustrate the actual undergrowth that was there at the time.
